What You Need To Know

In order to be a successful homeopath, it is necessary to be both competent and confident in your knowledge, abilities, and skills gained from your education. In order to take the information you gain from classes and texts and apply them, it is necessary to have practical experience of both case-taking and patient management. The internship and externship clinics at the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine (CCHM) are designed to give you hands on experience to be ready and able to start your own homeopathic practice from the day you graduate.

Two Fold Approach

1) Internship Clinic

The CCHM Internship Clinic is an observational clinic, where students have the opportunity to watch a master homeopath take live cases with real patients. During these internship clinics, students are encouraged to ask questions to gain the insight and perspective needed to manage their own cases. Students are able to observe the homeopath navigate the case taking process in order to identify the patient symptoms that need to be addressed and treated by the homeopathic remedy. By watching this live interaction in a clinical environment, students get exposed to the communication skills needed in order to feel confident in providing care to a patient.

After each clinical session students submit their own case write-up and analysis. As a result of this, students are provided direct feedback from our clinical experts. This assessment is an excellent opportunity to have an experienced practicing homeopath provide feedback and constructive criticism on your analysis, as well as provide insights and knowledge that will be useful to you as a future homeopath.  This is an invaluable opportunity to build your confidence and competency in case analysis and remedy selection. By exposing students to a diverse range of cases, our program equips them with the skills to navigate complexities, think critically, and approach each patient as a unique individual. This experiential learning not only builds clinical proficiency but also fosters empathy and compassion, essential traits of an effective homeopath.

The internship clinic experience provides over 100+ hours of homeopathic observation and analysis. Going through this clinical training model, prepares students for our Clinical Externship, where they apply their newly gained homeopathic skills and insights towards their own patients.

    2) Clinical Externship

CCHM’s Clinical Externship is in essence a Homeopathic apprenticeship. Through this process, you will be applying everything you have learned during your studies and Clinical Internship towards your own patients.  Each student is supervised by a professional homeopath who will mentor them through their own cases.

The first step of the Externship is for students to market themselves as homeopathic students to find new patients in their own communities. In essence, these are the student’s patients and they can continue to work with them after graduation.

The people you treat during these cases can become the first patients of your homeopathic practice after you graduate.

Students are responsible for treating these patients homeopathically under the supervision of the homeopathic supervisor. Each student will take their patients’ case(s) and write a full homeopathic case write-up and analysis to the same degree as the Internship Clinic. This case analysis is then submitted to the homeopathic supervisor along with the student’s case notes. The supervisor will review, provide feedback on the student’s case-taking and analysis, then confirm whether or not you have a strong homeopathic case for remedy selection. Only when the student and supervisor both feel confident in the case analysis and remedy selection,  will the supervisor give the student the ‘green-light’ to proceed. Student’s will advise their patient of the remedy selection and give them instructions on how to take the remedy. It is then the responsibility of the student to observe any changes or symptoms that the patient may experience through follow-up consultations, referring back to the supervisor through every step of the process to confirm the next-steps in the homeopathic treatment.

Through the Internship and Externship clinic training, we provide our students the number of case-hours necessary  to meet the clinical requirements of both the College of Homeopaths of Ontario as well as the Council for Homeopathic Certification (*Hours are calculated using the recommended formula from CHO and CHC respectively).

Practice makes perfect, which is why at CCHM we provide students with an abundance of practical experience. Our clinical training stands as a testament to our commitment to producing competent, compassionate, and confident homeopathic practitioners. When our students graduate from CCHM they have all the skills and assets they need to have a successful homeopathic career.  Through hands-on experience, personalized mentorship, and exposure to diverse cases, we prepare our students to embrace their professional journey with poise and expertise.
