Why I want to become a Homeopathic Practitioner

Kelsey C., Almonte, Ontario

My journey to homeopathy started with an odd allergic reaction. When I was in my late teens I started to get large, red, circular marks on my legs, ankles and wrists. I tried antifungal and anti-inflammatory creams but nothing seemed to work. I went to a walk in clinic to see a doctor and without looking at it or listening to my symptoms he told me it was an allergy, gave me pills to take for a week then sent me on my way. The antihistamines did help but when I finished the prescription it came back just like before. I was perplexed that even after all those pills it had not changed a thing. I began to take allergy pills several times a day every single day for the next 7 years. That was my first experience I can remember where I felt abandoned by western medicine and doctors, no matter who I saw they did not seem concerned about getting to the root of the cause or the fact that I was taking a daily medicine. Over time the reaction got lesser and I was able to properly manage my symptoms through diet once I had that knowledge acquired through a homeopathic allergy test.

I am currently an Early Childhood Educator. In my 10 years working in this field I have seen chronic illness rapidly on the rise, I have seen injuries from preventative medicines and over the counter medicines and the toll it takes on families. It wasn’t until I became pregnant that these experiences came to the forefront of my mind as I began to think of how I was going to give my family the best care and best chance at a healthy life and immune system. My husband and I dove deep into research on all possible avenues affecting children today and the information we came across was concerning. Our research is ever on-going but at this juncture we have decided the less toxins and medications for our family, the better.

When my son turned 6 months old we began to seek a doctors advice again,  he seemed to have some red circles around his mouth that went down to his body. I had tried every kind of natural cream I could get my hands with no success, so we ended up at the doctor. As I experienced many years before we were given a very simple answer “it’s just eczema, put these steroids on it” and we were sent on our way; again just like before, when the prescription was finished it came back even worse. I knew at that time I did not want to use steroids and so I would not use them as long as I could until the eczema got so bad that we needed them. We were eventually sent to a dermatologist who also said the same thing but provided us with a weaker mixed version of the cream we had been given. I went to many specialists and tried everything to control his eczema. We had the best results after a Naturopathic Doctor suggested a blood test to determine food sensitivities, then we avoided those foods (over 30) the eczema became manageable.

I have seen homeopathy work many times through my motherhood journey; I have used the homeopathic teething remedies, cough syrups and specific pellets to treat certain coughs and pain. We found a tick on my son in fall 2018 and discovered Ledum which we used on a regiment for 3 weeks on the advice of a homepath. An unexpected result that came from using the Ledum, a stubborn toe blister-like bump that would not heal, completely cleared and it has never returned, I now suspect it was a bacterial infection.

Along with Homeopathy I have a success story from using Bowen therapy. Two years after my son was born, my husband and I decided to add another addition to our family. We began trying to conceive our next child. After many months of trying we could not figure out why I was not able to conceive, even though it happened exactly as planned with our son. I had tried some herbal remedies to help with a possible hormonal dysfunction but they did not help. I found through tests that I did not appear to be ovulating, the only sign that something might be wrong was a stinging pain that sometimes appeared in my lower left abdomen since my previous birth. We made an appointment at the fertility clinic and we were told there was no reason I should not be able to conceive after completed tests and ultrasounds. I was told by a close friend about Bowen therapy and how it can realign your body and help with back pain, that I had been experiencing for a while. At my first session my Bowen Therapist told me how misaligned my hips had been and by the end of the first session my back pain was gone and the twinge in my lower abdomen had disappeared. Three weeks later and one more session I found out I was pregnant and I know that the pain and abdomen pain along with a misalignment had caused my infertility.

I have a little knowledge of homeopathy but I really want to take this course to increase my knowledge and develop the knowledge and skills needed to treat ailments. I feel truly passionate about a life managed with homeopathy and clean living and I would love to help other people enjoy their lives with less medication and the skills to take their health into their hands. I believe my values and nature reflect that of homeopaths and I believe I would make a valuable impact to the world of homeopathy if accepted into this program.
