Why I Decided to Become a Homeopath

By Shelly F., Los Angeles, California Often the roadmap of one’s life follows the expected. And that is okay. But sometimes, when one is fortunate enough to be able to see an unexpected fork in the road – and has the courage and the insight to follow it – it can lead to a more multi-faceted and exploratory journey…. For me, homeopathy was that fork in the road. My second and third children were ages 3 and 1, respectively. In the course of the previous 12 months, I had filled 9 antibiotic prescriptions for each of them.  A last-minute suggestion from an acquaintance to try osteopathy to avert a myringotomy operation was successful! …. And that alternative therapy led to my encounter with beloved homeopathy and my current homeopath Dr Robert Gramlich, MD in 2000.   I soon discovered that while osteopathy was extremely helpful in moving mucus, homeopathy was much more practical in terms of a low-cost and low-maintenance treatment plan. I noted the quick response to the right remedy, and the strength it gave the body not only to fight off sickness, but better yet, to stave off sickness. After watching these two children develop strong immune systems in response to their remedies, I became ‘hooked’, and over time, I referred many family members and friends to get their constitutional remedies. In the meantime, I also began dabbling in using homeopathy for acute situations, especially for friends or family who weren’t interested in getting a constitutional remedy. The thrill of choosing the right remedy and the surprise on their part when it works so quickly is unbelievable – I never tire of it. Over time, I became more familiar with and interested in the powerful simple brilliance of homeopathy. My homeopath noted my interest in the nuances of the remedies and began to explain in detail his choice of remedy each time I went in for myself or one of my five children. I always found it fascinating. He also began to encourage my formal study of homeopathy, and offered to help if I needed a supervisor or a place to do clinical hours.  After so much reading and learning and practice with friends and family, it seemed natural to formally study a subject I found so intriguing and so enjoyed practicing. In today’s world of big pharma and the desire for quick solutions, people are using more and more drugs while becoming less and less healthy.  Much of the population are layering their bodies with toxins, instead of utilizing the science of homeopathy, whose beauty lies in its strength to trigger the person’s own immune system to action. This is mostly due to lack of exposure and education about homeopathy, and the fact that the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies invest a lot of money and time in debunking homeopathy. My hope is that once I am an established and successful homeopath, I can slowly but surely, work towards reversing these trends, one patient at a time, and making this world a healthier, and hence, happier and more wholesome place.
