I was first introduced to homeopathy when a friend recommended Hyland’s teething tablets for my daughter. She swore they were safe, that I could give them anytime and that there was no chance of an overdose. As someone who avoided medication, they sounded good to me. They seemed to calm my daughter down when she was fussy and drooling from her new teeth. As we moved past the teething phase, I never really gave homeopathy another thought until my health took a turn for the worse several years later.
One weekend in September, I woke up and realized I couldn’t bend one of my fingers and it was red and swollen. It got worse as the weekend went by and I couldn’t remember any injury to it. I knew something was wrong, and frantically began searching online for an explanation. Everything pointed to rheumatoid arthritis, but I tried to stay calm as a waited through several months of doctors’ appointments and imaging to find out what was wrong.
Eventually my rheumatologist said that although he couldn’t diagnose me because of a lack of blood markers, I was in the early stages of RA and it was only a matter of time before my symptoms got worse and damaged my joints. He said that diet didn’t help with the disease and told me I needed to start medication to prevent it from getting worse. The drugs I would be taking had a history of causing retinal damage and cancer. I was terrified of what my future looked like, living with an autoimmune disease and chronic pain.
After weeks of prayer and researching alternatives to conventional medicine, I found a naturopathic doctor who said she could help me. I felt hopeful, but really didn’t think her treatment would work. It sounded too good to be true when she said that there were no side effects and I should just feel better.
After a lengthy interview, she prescribed some diet changes, herbal medicine and two homeopathic remedies. She was a little vague when I asked what they were for, which made me curious. Over the next few weeks, I did start to feel better. By the end of the month, I could begin to bend my finger slightly and the redness was gone. Other symptoms that I had mentioned were also improving. It continued that way over the next several months until I had full range of motion in my finger again. I was amazed at the improvement, and wanted to know more about the remedies.
I checked out a couple books at the library and was immediately intrigued. I wanted to know more about how the remedies worked. Every time I saw my doctor, I asked more questions, trying to figure out how I could use homeopathy for my family. It was hard to pick the right ones at first, and frustrated me, but it just made me want to read more and keep trying.
During the time that I was seeing my new doctor, my daughter had started preschool and got sick within the first month. Her congestion and cough lasted months, in spite of repeated trips to the pediatrician. After five months of breathing treatments, rounds of antibiotics and steroid inhalers, they declared she “just has allergies”. I knew my daughter was sick and conventional medicine wasn’t helping her at all. I took her in to see my doctor, who prescribed a couple changes to her diet and Pulsatilla. Within one week, she was back to normal, and all her cold symptoms were gone.
It was one thing to experience healing myself, but there was something even more affirming about seeing my daughter’s drastic change in health. I knew this was a turning point in our lives and I wondered about studying homeopathy more seriously. It also led to other lifestyle changes, including cleaning up our diet by eating organic, non-GMO food; using alternatives to plastic; and changing most of our cleaning products and personal care products to more natural ones. All the changes created stress in the beginning and my husband thought I was a little crazy, but I knew in the long run it would benefit my family and lead to improved health.
Over the next few years, my daughter and I continued to see our doctor as needed. I continued to look up remedies that she prescribed and ask more questions. I loved that as I learned more about the remedies, I could decide when to use them when we got sick. I didn’t have to keep running back to the doctor for a prescription.
Homeopathy continued to impress me with the range of ailments it could address. It helped me move past the trauma from an earthquake I was in during college, and let go of the devastation and anger from my first birth experience. I don’t think I would have had another baby if not for homeopathy. After the birth of my second daughter, I remained pain-free and drug-free thanks to a homeopathic protocol from a homeopath I consulted with at the end of my pregnancy. And the list goes on!
Over the past several years, I’ve been sharing my experiences with homeopathy and natural medicine with my family and friends. Using my knowledge of remedies that I’ve taken or used for my kids, I’ve been able to help people with injuries, tantrums, fevers, etc. I love helping people in this capacity, and I’m excited to continue learning and show them the possibilities of better health through homeopathy.
