“There is an alternative form of medicine, Homeopathy, which effectively and efficiently treats and addresses human disease processes and ailments”

How I Reached the Decision to Become a Homeopath

 By A. Anahita I.

I was introduced to natural and alternative medicine in my preteen years. I lived and grew up with my grandparents that were strong believers in using daily diet and nutrition as a way to prevent and combat disease. Most importantly, they were very knowledgeable about the use of simple natural remedies to treat ailments.  I still recall my childhood winters when I was forced to eat a certain food not because it was on sale or tasted good, but because it was good for me and prevented me from falling ill to seasonal cold and flu that so often kept my close friends and classmates off school.  As a matter of fact, I had not used any antibiotics or any anti-inflammatory medications until I was in my 20s. I am extremely grateful to my grandparents, because what they taught me in my early years helped me through the years that followed:

When I was in my third year of university, I came down with a severe case of ear infection and flu that lead to severe case of vertigo. I was so ill that I had to postpone all of my final exams. Although the physical signs and symptoms of the illness were treated with conventional medications, but soon after I developed severe anxiety and panic attacks that could not be resolved with any of the prescription medications my family physician prescribed. I went through the remaining months of my third year of university battling anxiety and panic attacks; I had lost all hope and thought I could not obtain my university degree. I was starting to get depressed until the summer of 1998, a family friend with a medical background encouraged me to see a Homeopathic practitioner. After visiting with the practitioner, I followed his recommendations on a few homeopathic medications and he also recommended that I try meditation and relaxation techniques in conjunction with the medications: As he put it: “The medications only treat your symptoms but as long as the cause of the ailment is not treated: your anxiety could come back with a single, simple trigger and then you have to start over”.  And I did not want to start over, so, I researched and learned about various meditation techniques and their benefits, and I made meditation a part of my daily routine.  Within few months, with the aid of homeopathic medication and the practice of daily meditation, my anxiety resolved and I was ready to go back to university and obtain my degree.

Over the few years that followed however, I got busy with life and my studies and neglected my health and diet; I gained a substantial amount of weight, which lead to joint pains and heart palpitations at the age of 32.  At the time, I was in my second year of dental school, and had learned about how poor nutrition and diet contribute to disease cycle. Also, that there is a strong connection between the diseases of the oral cavity and diseases of the rest of the body. It was not until I started seeing my own patients in the clinic that I started noticing the strong evidence of mouth-body connection of the disease in real life.  So I made a decision to stop the vicious cycle of disease in my body and get control of my health before it was too late.  I have never been interested in dieting to lose weight.  I joined a local gym and started changing how and what I ate: I developed and practiced the affirmation/mantra:  “My body is the temple holding my soul - it is sacred to me and my mouth is the gateway to this temple, so I am forbidden to put any form of food or beverage that would desecrate the temple and destroy it”.  With this new mantra and discipline I started losing weight and maintaining it to this day.  This new eating practice added to my experience of daily meditation became a collective tool that helped me and my mother in the years that followed.

In the third summer of my dental school in 2008, I detected/noticed the clinical signs of breast cancer in my mother through visual exam of the breast and clinical exam of the lymph nodes and urged her to seek immediate medical attention: In years and months prior to that summer, the cancer had gone undetected by the multiple yearly mammograms and routine diagnostic imaging, with the test results coming back as negative or inconclusive. Therefore, by the time of its diagnosis, the cancer had already spread to the lymph nodes and my mother was diagnosed with third stage breast cancer.  In the fourth and final year of my dental school, my mother underwent surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation.  It was also during this stressful time, that we both were introduced to Art of Living; a combination of breathing /meditation exercises called Kriya, practiced in the program.  With the regular practice of Kriya and my previous experiences with healthy diet, exercise and meditation, I was able to get through the final year of dental school without any interruptions or anxiety attacks. Most importantly, my mother was able to maintain her positive and calm attitude during her treatments, and by the summer of 2009 my mother was cancer free.  However, due to cancer treatments and medications used, she started experiencing severe referred pains in and around the surgical area and scars tissues, peripheral neuropathy, and severe joint pain amongst many other side effects of cancer treatment, and conventional prescription medications did neither cure nor treat those symptoms. Once again we had to explore ways other than mainstream medicine to address the health problems. Finally, my mother consulted with a Naturopath and Homeopathic practitioner who was able to help her with many of her symptoms especially the joint pain.  She also learned about healthy diet tailored to her medical condition, and natural ways to manage and treat her symptoms.

I further learned about the shortcomings of conventional prescription medications when my father underwent treatment for prostate cancer.  As a result of the overdose of oral cancer medication caused by failure to adjust the dosage of the medication to his changing weight as he lost weight, he developed irreversible dementia which affected him and all of our lives. Once again, my mother sought the advice of her Naturopath and Homeopathic practitioner to slow down the speed of the progression of my father’s dementia through diet and natural supplements.

My most life changing experience that led me to pursue the study of Homeopathy was when I was diagnosed with Menangioma in fall of 2019. Due to size and location of the tumor, I had a stroke during the surgery.  As a result, I lost all motor functions on my left side of the body. I was able to gain all motor functions back and recover fully within 2 months after the surgery and stroke through my determination and positive attitude and most importantly the help of the nurses and physiotherapists that cared for me.  However, I experienced many challenges during the recovery including restlessness, anxiety and insomnia. I was prescribed multiple conventional prescription medications to help me while I was staying in the hospital. The medications did not resolve the symptoms, and their additive effects left me with additional symptoms including tremor. When requested to take natural supplements and homeopathic medications: I was told, they were not effective and not approved by the hospital. Therefore, once I was released from the hospital, I was able to gain control of my symptoms fully through natural supplements and the help of my Homeopathic practitioner. Today, I can happily say that I have fully recovered and able to practice dentistry without any limitations.

After my experience with stroke and tumor, I had to re-evaluate my life and the experiences I have had both personally and professionally.  I entered the profession of dentistry with the philosophy of care that is focused more on prevention of disease than the crisis/ emergency management of disease. For this reason I have always worked to educate my patients and give them the tools and techniques to improve and maintain their oral health.  I have always enjoyed diagnosis, treatment and helping my patients achieve their optimum oral health. My rewards in return have been my patients getting their healthy smiles back, and improving their oral health and consequently their general health.  However, throughout my years as a practicing general dentist, diagnosing and managing many diseases manifested in oral tissues in my patients, I have come to recognize some of the failures of the conventional medicine and appreciate the value of alternative treatment options not thought in our dental schools. I have seen and treated children with overwhelming rampant caries due to their parent’s poor knowledge of nutrition and oral hygiene. I have extracted teeth in young adults addicted to prescription pain medications originally prescribed for pain management after an accident. I have also treated patients with high level of dental anxiety currently on anxiety medications that either do not work or leave them sedated, stripping them of their ability to make simple informed decisions. I have also seen many adult patients that could not maintain a reasonably healthy diet and enjoy life because they lost all their dentition as a result of dry mouth caused by multiple prescription medications they were taking.  I do not believe that all conventional medicine is ineffective, but I believe that it is not the only answer to effectively treating disease and healing the body.

Through my years of personal and professional experiences, I have come to believe and know that there is an alternative form of medicine, Homeopathy, which effectively and efficiently treats and addresses human disease processes and ailments. Homeopathy is a more targeted way of treatment and less likely to cause harm to the body, and it also takes into account the importance of a holistic approach to patient care. Homeopathy also respects the importance of body-mind connection in healing processes and body’s natural ability to heal itself.  While it can be a standalone effective method of treatment for patients, homeopathy can also effectively complement the conventional medical practices.  Therefore, I am looking forward to becoming a homeopath and the day I can offer this form of treatment to my patients and people whose illness cannot be treated by conventional medicine.
