As of Wednesday, the practice of homeopathy has become regulated in Ontario, which is good news for local practitioner Sarah Hutchinson.
Prior to the proclamation, homeopathy -- the treatment of disease through natural substances -- was self-regulated, meaning there was no set standard of practice. Now the province's Homeopathy Act, which was established in 2007, requires practitioners to register through the College of Homeopaths of Ontario.
"Regulation will ensure that homeopaths practise to a standard that is defined and maintained," Bhupinder Sharma, the college's president, said in a news release. "In order to register, applicants must have proven their competence through an assessment of their knowledge, skill and judgment."
