My journey with Homeopathy started unexpectedly, eighteen years ago while I was studying in the Faculty of Science at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Since then, a series of events led me to my decision today to follow my path as a Homeopath.
Our Faculty arranged for guest speakers to give lectures about various subjects quite often. However, there was one guest speaker in particular that caught my attention more so than others; George Vithoulkas. George Vithoulkas, is considered one of the top intellectuals in the Homeopathic society, something which was unknown to me at the time. Vithoulkas gave a speech about Homeopathy which was a practice that contradicted everything I had learned in University. Vilthoulkas spoke about remedies of infinitesimal concentration, potentization through vibration, memory of water and personalized therapies, all of which were foreign ideas to me. What stood out the most was when he pointed out that a symptom like fever, is in fact not the actual illness a person may be suffering from. He went on to explain how while traditional medicine can suppress a symptom like fever, Homeopathy seeks to understand the real source of where a symptom like fever is stemming from. I left the lecture perplexed but something inside me had sparked an unexplained interest to learn more. Science had always taught me to follow an experimental method, and yet I was now exposed to the holistic method.
At the time I was also suffering from acute Dermatitis Seborrheica. The first symptoms appeared at the age of seventeen, and during my undergraduate studies the symptoms became severe due to stress. My family doctor’s solution was to prescribe me Cortizone and Betamethazone. Even though the symptoms would disappear, as soon my treatment would conclude, the symptoms would resurface in an even more aggressive manner. It was a vicious cycle, and my doctor advised me that when it comes to Autoimmune Disease there is nothing more that can be done. I was disappointed that there was no long term solution to alleviate my body from going through such a painful experience.
I always thought that with the pass of time my health issues will either be correctly diagnosed, or cured. But, 10 years later after George Vithoulkas lecture, I was still dealing with acute Dermatitis, was now even experiencing insomnia, and overall I felt like my body was in a way crying out for help. Having nothing to lose at that point, I decided to take a leap of faith and try the alternative method of Homeopathy Vilthoulkas had brought up years ago in his guest lecture.
I remember feeling anxious during my first session with the Homeopath, and even recall a sense of disappointment that I spent so many years suffering of something that could have been treated differently. The Homeopath’s diagnosis was that I suffered from emotional suppression. A complete different diagnosis from what I was given years ago by my family doctor. Soon after my first treatment all of my symptoms started to disappear. I was back to having regular sleeping patterns, my Dermatitis withdrew gradually by 95%, and for the first time in years I was able to look in the mirror and see my skin clear of redness, dryness, and no sign of a rash. The change was not just external, but also internal. It was as if my emotional and psychological state had been covered with a veil for years, and suddenly this veil had been lifted, freeing a new self. Even though the experience differs from individual to individual, for me Homeopathy had at that moment impacted my life in ways I did not think were possible.
Since then, not only have I followed Homeopathy, but have also recommended the practice to others as well. Seeing the difference Homeopathy made in my life, some of my friends even decided to try the practice themselves with positive results as well. Even though my background in Science acted as a resistance for many years to accept Homeopathy, I am a firm believer that I value the impact Homeopathy can have in a person’s life more so because of my background in Science. I want to become a Homeopath to help others see the value of treating their health issues at the core and to find a permanent cure with Homeopathy as opposed to a solution that will only bring temporary relief.
My previous educational background as well as my firsthand experience with Homeopathy have led me to acknowledge that my interest goes far beyond. I believe that the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine is the right place for me to study in depth the practice of Homeopathy and become the Homeopath I always aspired to be. My aim is to help individuals find a holistic and infinite solution to their health issues. In addition, one of my long term goals would be to conduct research in Homeopathy and provide insight to issues that lack data.
