"I Feel Called to this Work"

From Rebecca B., Metairie, Louisiana

My discovery of homeopathy came very slowly over time. My first introduction happened about six or seven years ago while living in California and trying out some different options for my son who wasn’t having much luck with traditional medicine. I remember seeing a homeopathic doctor once and thinking she was very kind and thorough, different than other doctors we had seen. But I was a single mother with little support and I couldn’t continue to pay out of pocket for her help. I discontinued his treatment because I couldn’t observe any immediate results. At this time, I had no understanding of what homeopathic medicine was.

Fast forward one marriage and three children later, I suddenly found myself with a family to raise! My background had been in Montessori and Waldorf Early Child Education. I worked in some different schools, but enjoyed creating a kind of hybrid style for myself in our home. My new work was dedicated to the home arts- cooking, cleaning, and caring for the health and wellbeing of everyone. Growing up in Louisiana, I was taught to trust western medicine. There wasn’t anyone around me challenging it nor asking questions about alternatives. It wasn’t until I moved to California at age 29 that I was introduced to acupuncture, midwifery, chiropractic care, and yes, some homeopathy. My midwife recommended it for my acute care, including hemorrhoids, fevers, sleeplessness, induction, etc.  I found it was really helpful at times!  It seemed to be so safe, have zero side effects, and was kind of unbelievable.

Again, with little knowledge about homeopathy, my husband and I found it to be our top choice for care for our little ones. We had a book that we would look up homeopathic and herbal remedies for common childhood illnesses. More than often, it really helped.  It wasn’t until 2019 that we decided to hire a homeopathic practitioner to help care for our three year old daughter who was having chronic fevers and appearing a little apathetic towards life. She needed help that was beyond us and beyond our pediatrician’s scope of knowledge. This began my quest to understand homeopathic medicine more clearly. With the practitioners help, we knocked out her fevers and her overall health and wellbeing improved dramatically. My husband and I also became clients. We started addressing ongoing issues such as migraines, allergies, weight gain, fatigue, depression, and anxiety. These were issues we were always struggling to keep at bay, but feeling overwhelmed at times and agreeing that prescription medicine was never an option for us.  Under the care of our practitioner, and somewhat mysteriously, my overall health began to improve and I have a comfort knowing it will continue to improve and I don’t feel  so helpless any longer.

One big surprise for me was that seeing my homeopathic practitioner was a lot like therapy. We always got to the heart of the matter. In fact, he is really good at connecting physical sufferings to mental sufferings in a way that I could never see before. But he doesn’t direct the whole time, instead he guides me to see it for myself. He would only point out patterns or hesitations where something was hidden. It was all so subtle, yet life changing.

I am currently pregnant with my fifth child and looking towards the future. I would like to become certified in homeopathy and extend this knowledge to my home state of Louisiana. I can really see that it is in-line with my prior studies in philosophy and anthroposophy, as well as Montessori pedagogy. I was always interested in helping children, and was taught in my studies to observe and treat the whole child. I was taught to observe their interests and create lessons that they could work out on their own. I love this work. But I have noticed there is a health stumbling block. Sometimes there are aspects out of my control, and sometimes there are aspects in my control. Sometimes its as simple as observing that a child has not had a drink of water all day. I feel ready in my career to go deeper. To understand the workings of the human body and how I can better help give someone a better start. I trust homeopathy to be the safest and most thorough field of study to go about this. There is a lot of ignorance and hesitation in the south here where I live. I believe I can help bring Homeopathy out of the dark. I feel called to this work.
