From Engineering to Homeopathy

Miran F., Abu Dhabi, UAE
I studied Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, USA.  There I always toyed with the idea of studying medicine after my Bachelors degree, or taking medical classes as Johns Hopkins is one of the top medical schools, but eventually I disregarded it and concentrated on Engineering.  I then worked in construction in Washington DC and Abu Dhabi, UAE.
After getting married, I moved with my husband to Dublin and later to Paris where I attended university and received an MBA in Hospitality. With the births of my children over the past ten years, it has been difficult to have a full-time job and so I, at first, worked as a freelance financial consultant on various hospitality projects, but with the downturn in the economy at the time, I resorted to simply volunteering most of my time in various events and activities at my children’s school.
My path towards homeopathy started with my first child. As a toddler, my son used to get severe croup and have difficulty breathing, that we had to rush him to the hospital where he would be put on a nebulizer for some time.  I even had a nebulizer with ventolin and other such steroids at home that doctors insisted were safe to use whenever my son had difficulty breathing.  I always had an uneasy feeling about using them and was worried that with the continuous use, my son would develop asthma, a condition very common in the UAE among children (1 out of 4).
At about the same time, a doctor that leans more towards alternative and homeopathic medicine, introduced me to Homeopathy and gave me the Pharmaceutical Book of Boiron.  This 250+ page book has all the common ailments with the appropriate medicine to use (therapeutics) as well as a simplified Materia Medica.  It has become my first reference when trying to cure my kids of common diseases such as colds and coughs.
My primary concern is always my family’s welfare, and to create the proper nurturing environment for them to grow and excel, which has led me to learn and study homeopathy through books and various websites. I have been continuously learning more and more, but at a very slow pace as I can only do it in my spare time after all the activities and events at school are done.  I am always looking for books to further my knowledge but I have reached a point where I will need formal instruction to help me get to the next level.
Here in the UAE, homeopathy is mainly practiced among the Indian community and trying to find a specialized doctor or clinic is very difficult.  So I have had to rely mainly on the Internet and books to further my understanding of Homeopathy and case taking.  Currently, my library is full of books on the subject but I am still lacking the essential and basic concepts of Homeopathy.  I am able to cure the common cold but I would like to help others in combating more threatening diseases.
Through research and reading, I have managed to figure out the different homeopathic constitutions of my kids.  Rayane is Arsenicum Album consistution, Yazan is Phosphorous constitution and Kaia is Pulsatilla constitution.  This I learnt along the way as I realized that even if my children had the same symptoms they needed different remedies to cure them more efficiently.  Now I am able to accurately and quickly prescribe the correct remedy.
My family have been my guinea pigs and most of what I know is through trial and error.  I would like to be more consistent and accurate in my diagnosis and prescriptions and I would like Homeopathy to be more attainable in the UAE.
