What brought you to the study and practice of homeopathy?

I think most people are drawn to homeopathy from personal experience, and that is what brought me to study, and eventually, practice. After some time with traditional medicine and no real long-lasting results; I decided to research and experience alternatives. I first tried Naturopathy, which, was helpful, but over time, I found that I was always taking supplements and many of the supplements were not compatible with my system.

Then I tried Chiropractic, which again was helpful, but I found that I would need to have a treatment 2 to 3 times a week. This was followed by Acupuncture, which was a longer lasting treatment. It was during an acupuncture treatment, that the therapist asked if I ever tried homeopathy. I did a bit of research and decided that it was worth a try. As you all know, treatment with homeopathy can take some time, but I stuck with it, and eventually found the healing nature of this medicine. This medicine, practiced ‘homeopathically’ and not isopathically or in the singular, reductionist way is what captured my attention. The homeopath spent time to understand what was going on with me (not part of me!); asked many questions and strove to really perceive and understand my story. Just this process alone was enough to pique my curiosity. When slowly but surely, the medicine helped release troubling symptoms, I was hooked! I had to study this wonderful medicine.

My other personal experience, was when my daughter was 2 years old (she is now 27!). She suffered from ear infections. Antibiotics did not help her and she was chronically ill. I then, took her to a homeopath, and literally in a few weeks, she was treated/cured and no more ear infections; rapidly, gently and permanently. Observing my daughter’s healing is also what ‘sold’ me to study and eventually practice homeopathy.

Where did you study homeopathy? Did you complete graduate studies in other areas as well?

I studied at the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine, here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I completed my Masters of Science in Homeopathy at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom. As you know, the study of homeopathy does not stop; so, over the years, I have attended conferences and seminars. I have also presented at conferences such as the Joint American Homeopathic Conference. I continue to study with Dr. Jose Isaac, Indian Doctor and Homeopath (his father studied from a student of Kent’s!). A few years ago, I attended his classes and clinics in India (Kerala). An enriching and wonderful 3 week experience of homeopathic studies!

How many years have you been practising, and can you estimate how many years your longest-standing patient has been a patient?

This is my 19th year of practice! Nineteen years of observing how this wonderful medicine has helped people. My longest standing patient has been 18 years; who I actually saw last week!

I have the opportunity to treat families and find such joy in watching how children (and their parents) grow and develop through the years; and how homeopathy has strengthened their vitality and improved their health. I ask my patients for patienceJ, homeopathy can be a rapid medicine, but generally for chronic conditions, it takes time. But the homeopathic treatment is a longer lasting one and the end result is a patient that is literally free from ‘disease’ and can then move with ‘ease’ in the life that they were meant to live.

What is your favourite Materia Medica?

Mmmm, good question. There are many to choose from and I try to read a variety of them. Some that I like are: Lippe, Hering, Boger, and Nash. I also enjoy reading Nature’s Materia Medica by Murphy, Practical Homeopathic Therapeutics by Dewey and Margaret Tyler’s, Homeopathic Drug Pictures. The important thing is to keep reading, Materia Medica and of course the Organon. All of these can help clarify our goals in case taking, case analysis, homeopathic prescription and case management.

What made you want to get into teaching? What do you find most rewarding about the teaching experience?

I am a big believer in life-long learning; the opportunity to learn new things, to expand ones’ mind and grow in experience. As a teacher, I have the opportunity to guide others through their learning; and this is what inspired me to teach. Connecting with students, the creative process of teaching a variety of material and learning from students is such a gift.

What would you say is different about CCHM from other schools?

CCHM has a good foundation in teaching the basics of homeopathy; so that from there a student/new homeopath can develop their own style and skills of practice. There is a lot of camaraderie and support among the students, faculty and staff. The school really cares about a student’s well-being and academic development. CCHM has been a leading homeopathic college in North America for over 23 years. Any educational institution that has such ‘staying power’ must be doing something right. The commitment that Raymond and Joyce (founders of CCHM) have for the college and homeopathy keeps shining year to year!

What is it about Homeopathy that has kept you “hooked” for so many years?

After so many years of homeopathic experience; it just never gets ‘old’. Every patient brings a new exploration, a new experience and new understanding into this Medical Art that I have the privilege to practice. Observing Homeopathy’s efficacy; when practiced properly; works over and over again. Why not get ‘hooked’ to a practice that works!!

How does the practice of Homeopathy enrich your life?

It has made me look at health from a different perspective; it is less about disease and sickness and more about prevention and vitality. It is a true paradigm shift and this happened early on during my studies; I thought and talked differently about health. This shift has continued during my years of practice where I can educate my patients to a new way of viewing health.

What might you tell prospective students considering this as a career choice?

If you love to solve puzzles, think critically and be creative, then homeopathy is the career for you. If you are persistent, ready for a challenge and look forward to new experiences each day, then this is the career for you. If you want to truly help others improve their health, in a natural and holistic way, then this is the career for you.  It will change your own life as well as your patients.
